Job Description

POSITION GENERAL SUMMARY

Lead and manage the tax function within the Finance Centre of Excellence (COE), encompassing both direct and indirect taxation. The role focuses on ensuring full compliance with tax laws and regulations, providing strategic tax advisory support to business units, and driving tax efficiency across the Group. The incumbent will also act as a key liaison with tax authorities, external advisors, and internal stakeholders to strengthen tax governance, mitigate risks, and support business growth through sound tax planning. 

 

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

1. Tax Compliance and Reporting

  • Oversee accurate and timely filing of all tax returns (corporate income tax, SST, withholding tax, and other relevant taxes).
  • Review tax computations, deferred tax, and tax provisions for financial reporting and audit purposes.
  • Ensure Group-wide compliance with all statutory requirements and internal tax policies.
  • Ensure Group compliance to the Global Minimum Tax (GMT) and Cross border Country reporting (CbCr).
  • Manage tax audits, investigations, and correspondence with tax authorities.

2. Tax Advisory and Planning

  • Provide strategic tax advice on business transactions, projects, and restructuring activities.
  • Evaluate and implement tax incentives, exemptions, and deductions to optimize the Group’s tax position.
  • Conduct technical analysis on new laws and public rulings; assess their business impact and develop response strategies.

3. Transfer Pricing and Cross-Border Matters

  • Oversee the preparation of transfer pricing documentation in compliance with Malaysian and OECD guidelines.
  • Support intercompany pricing arrangements and ensure alignment with Group policy.
  • Management of intercompany transactions and policies (covers outside and local country).
  • Support on cross-border tax implications and treaty-related matters.

4. Governance, Policy, and Risk Management

  • Strengthen tax governance (all contracts, agreements, and etc.) through continuous improvement of internal controls, policies, and reporting processes.
  • Formulation of appropriate tax policy and application across the Group.
  • Maintain up-to-date tax risk registers and support internal audit reviews of tax compliance.
  • Ensure proper documentation and evidence retention for tax positions and filings.

5. Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with Finance, Legal, Operations, and other departments to align tax strategy with business objectives.
  • Liaise with external consultants, auditors, and tax authorities on complex or technical issues.
  • Communicate clearly with non-tax stakeholders to build an understanding of tax implications in decision-making.

6. Leadership and Capability Building

  • Manage and mentor a team of tax professionals within the COE.
  • Build tax awareness and knowledge across Finance and business teams through training and communication.
  • Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team.

Key Challenges

  • Keeping abreast of frequent changes in tax legislation and interpreting their business impact.
  • Managing complex tax exposures arising from multi-entity, cross-border, and project-based operations.
  • Driving automation and efficiency in tax reporting while maintaining compliance accuracy.
  • Building strong tax awareness across non-finance functions.

Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge of direct and indirect taxes, including Income Tax Act, SST, and Transfer Pricing Guidelines.
  • Proficiency in tax accounting, deferred tax, and financial reporting standards.
  • Good understanding of ERP (SAP).
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation abilities.
  • Leadership, mentoring, and stakeholder management.

Education

  • Degree Certificate preferably with Accounting/Finance/Taxation
  • Master Degree would be an added advantage

Relevant Industries

  • Degree with a minimum 5–7 years relevant experience in tax compliance and advisory..

Unique Requirement

  • Professional Qualification (ICAA,  ICAEW, CPA, ACCA, CIMA or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
  • Experience in both direct and indirect tax, with exposure to transfer pricing and tax audit management.
  • Experience in corporate tax, SST, tax planning, and team leadership roles.
